Commenting on the Scottish Fishermen's Federation call for a freeze on the number of days at sea, Liberal Democrat Fisheries spokesperson Liam McArthur said:
"Tough quotas for key stocks and reduced days at sea are a disastrous combination for the Scottish fishing fleet.
"It is therefore not surprising that the SFF is calling for a freeze on the number of days at sea. Further reductions could plunge the whitefish industry over the edge.
"Yet despite repeated calls for the Scottish Government to make clear to the Commission the threat posed to our whitefish fleet, Ministers have been reluctant to act. Their calls for reform of the CFP cut little ice with fishermen, who are demanding action now to save jobs and livelihoods over the coming 12 months."
