Commenting on the news that head teachers and pupils have expressed concerns about the ability of newly qualified teachers to teach literacy and numeracy, Liberal Democrat Education spokesperson Margaret Smith MSP said:
"Given that the Literacy commission recently highlighted that nearly 1 million Scots have literacy and numeracy problems, it is absolutely essential that student teachers are equipped with the basic practical skills they need to teach literacy and numeracy.
"Liberal Democrats hope that the Donaldson review into teacher training will take this very worrying report into account.
"The Scottish Government must ensure that student teachers are given training to teach the essential building blocks of literacy and numeracy"
