Edinburgh West MP Mike Crockart has welcomed news that the Coalition Government will be holding an inquiry into whether the UK security services were complicit in the torture of terror suspects.
It has been alleged that after the September 11th terrorist attacks there were a series of extraordinary rendition flights which landed in the UK and saw prisoners in US custody transferred to other countries where they would then be tortured.
Speaking after the announcement in the House of Commons Mike Crockart said:Mike Crockart MP: Edinburgh West
"I welcome the announcement from the Prime Minister that we are finally going to have a full investigation into the treatment of detainees.
"Although it is necessary that parts of this inquiry be held in private sessions, I am especially pleased to see that the Government will not be inhibiting the process by making sure that every piece of evidence requested will be released.
"The allegations have been a black mark on the UK's Human Rights record and the truth needs to be established so that we can learn any lessons necessary to ensure our actions in future are beyond reproach.
"The families of the victims have a right to justice and I look forward to the final ruling of the inquiry next year."
