Commenting on the Business Rates plan set out by the Scottish Government, Liberal Democrat Finance spokesperson Jeremy Purvis MSP said:
"It is wholly unacceptable for the SNP Government to make these repeated and contradictory assertions over the impact of the rates revaluation.
"Just last Thursday John Swinney said that 40% of Scottish businesses would be worse off and now he says 20%.
"This statement is a panic response as John Swinney knows there are businesses in his own area and across Scotland facing wholly unacceptable increases of as much as 100% in their rates bills this week.
"Hotels, petrol stations, marts and others are facing crippling increases without any transitional relief
"The Government has refused an FOI request by the Liberal Democrats to release all their information on the revaluation.
"The fact is that a transitional scheme could be introduced to phase in the massive increases faced by some businesses, while allowing those who gain under the revaluation to see the benefits immediately."
