"It is well known that drug abuse is one of Scotland's biggest challenges.

"Whilst overall drug use is going down slightly, the ongoing levels of use for dangerous 'party drugs' like cocaine remains a problem.

"It is also concerning that almost a quarter of those who had ever used drugs first tried them when they were under 16.

"There is no quick fix to this difficult problem, but these statistics do highlight the importance of a twin-track approach in tackling this scourge on our society.

"We must cut demand for drugs by the targeted prosecution of drug pushers who prey on the vulnerable in our society.

"Equally important is to set up a proper support structure to offer robust rehabilitation facilities to drug users.

"This approach combined with a strong focus on early intervention will make a real difference in tackling drug use in Scotland."
