Collaboration is key to securing best deal for Scottish fleet

Commenting on the Cabinet Secretary for Fisheries' comments before the Fisheries Council meeting in Brussels tomorrow, Liberal Democrat Fisheries spokesman Liam McArthur MSP said:

"It is strange that the Cabinet Secretary appears to be calling for the technical regulation to be dealt with at the same time as Total Allowable Catches and quotas in December. I think he would struggle to find a fisherman who would agree with him.

"I welcome Mr Lochhead's recognition at last that the deal he signed last year on the west coast fishery was virtually unworkable. His commitment to cut these fishermen some slack must now be delivered.

"In the meantime, he is right to highlight the challenge facing the UK delegation at these talks. It is all the more important therefore that he works constructively and collaboratively with his UK counterparts to secure the best outcome possible for Scotland's fleet at these talks and those next month."
