Swinson condemns postal strikes

Jo Swinson MP has condemned the strikes by Royal Mail workers, saying they are a threat to the future of the universal postal service.

Postal workers began their 24-hour walkout at 4am today, with another one planned for tomorrow and the Communication Workers Union expected to announce further strike action. Jo Swinson MP has warned that the strikes will only undermine Royal Mail and further threaten the survival of the universal postal service.

Commenting, Jo Swinson said:

"I share the frustration of the great majority of people over the disruption caused by the Royal Mail strikes. This is causing problems at all levels, from small businesses not receiving orders and invoices to vulnerable people not receiving appointment letters for swine flu vaccinations. Royal Mail has yet again lost contracts with Amazon over strike action, and this week lost a contract with the Scottish Government as well.

"The universal service which Royal Mail provides is a vital part of our economy, but it is under serious threat and these strikes could push it over the edge. Ministers in both Westminster and Holyrood must take urgent action to encourage management and union leaders to reach a deal as soon as possible."
