Jo Swinson MP will continue the fight to scrap care charges

Jo Swinson MP has responded to the Council's failure to scrap all of their new care charges and pledged to keep fighting the charges.
In a meeting last week, East Dunbartonshire Council made a decision to abolish charges for warden services for people in sheltered housing and to reduce by 30% charges for people needing help in their homes with daily tasks such as shopping and laundry.Jo Swinson MP: East Dunbartonshire
The Liberal Democrats, who opposed the introduction of the charges, put forward a motion to scrap all of the new charges by re-introducing a £15 fee for the uplift of bulky waste. The SNP also put forward a motion to scrap the new charges, but they proposed paying for it by cutting 125 social worker jobs.
Commenting, Jo Swinson said:
"I am deeply disappointed that the opposition groups on the Council were unable to get together and agree on how to scrap the Labour/Tory administration's unfair care charges. I genuinely do not believe however that cutting the posts of 125 social workers would have been in the best interests of vulnerable people across East Dunbartonshire.
"The Lib Dem, SNP and Independent Councillors did succeed in forcing the Labour/Tory Council to drop the sheltered housing warden charges and reduce the new home care charges by 30%. While this is a step in the right direction, I will continue to fight for these unfair charges to be scrapped entirely."
