MP Michael Moore is encouraging families in the Borders with young children to join him in celebrating Bookstart Day 2009.

The Bookstart programme, which has been running in the Borders for 10 years, aims to encourage parents and carers to enjoy books with their children from an early age. Working through partnership with the Scottish Borders Council Libraries and local health visitors, Bookstart provides children aged 0 - 5 with a series of free books before they start attending school.Michael Moore MP: Berwickshire, Roxburgh & Selkirk

This years Bookstart day will be marked by a series of events in libraries across the Borders, which will tie in with existing Bookstart Rhymetime sessions that aim to boost literacy and parent/child bonding in a fun and secure environment.

Mr Moore will be attending a Bookstart Rhymetime event in Duns library on 5 October.

Commenting, Mr Moore said:

'The importance of education and child literacy cannot be overstated and children all around the Borders have benefited from the Bookstart programme since it was introduced a decade ago.

'Staff at our local libraries deserve a great deal of credit for the work they do with parents and young children, and I am looking forward to joining them in Duns to celebrate Bookstart Day 2009'.

Gill Swales, Scottish Borders Council Young People's Services Co-ordinator, added:

'Most libraries in the Borders hold regular Bookstart Rhymetimes which have evolved out of the free book gifting programme for babies and toddlers, Bookstart. The sessions, which are led by trained library staff and Health Visitors, bring parents and carers together to experience songs, rhymes and stories with their babies and young children.

'The activities positively reinforce the message that sharing books with your child is fun, enjoyable and beneficial right from the start. Even babies enjoy the rhythm and rhymes, and libraries have collections of puppets, toys and baby instruments so they can join in the fun! Research shows that babies who are read to and experience books at an early age are better equipped when they start school'.
