Liberal Democrat Environment spokesperson Jim Hume MSP has called on the Scottish Government to mark Scottish Environment week by ditching its plans to sell off Scotland's family silver by offering long term leases on Scotland's forests.

Mr Hume will meet Forestry Commission union representatives tomorrow (Tuesday).

Jim Hume MSPCommenting, Mr Hume said:

"The Rural Affairs Secretary has marked Scottish Environment week by urging us all to 'go greener'. His new deputy, the Environment Minister, should mark the occasion by ditching the SNP's plan to sell off Scotland's family silver by offering long term leases on a quarter of Scotland's forests.

"This plan jeopardises local economies, risks local jobs and will prevent people enjoying some of our most beautiful natural assets.

"Liberal Democrats have collected well over 10,000 signatures to our petition against this plan and the Scottish Government's own consultation reportedly found an overwhelming number of respondents rejected the idea.

"I will be meeting with Forestry Commission union representatives tomorrow and I will continue our campaign against these proposals."

Malcolm Crosby, Chair of the Scotland Area Committee of the Forestry Commission Trade Unions added:

"There is widespread opposition to this plan, which threatens the ability of the Forestry Commission to deliver all the environmental and recreational benefits so popular with the public.

"If this plan goes ahead, the Government risks losing a tremendous asset accumulated over many generations."
