Elspeth Attwooll MEP has backed new rules that will make it harder than ever for drivers from other EU countries to avoid being caught for speeding and other road traffic offences committed here in Scotland.
A report on the subject of cross-border enforcement in the field of road safety has been passed by the European Parliament, with 594 votes for, 35 against and 40 abstentions.
Commenting, the Liberal Democrat MEP for Scotland said:
"At the moment foreign drivers believe that they can avoid penalties simply because the live abroad. This means they are more likely to drive recklessly, and is reflected in the disproportionate number of accidents in which they are involved.
So if we can stop people thinking that their behaviour will go unpunished, we can reduce the number of accidents on our roads, which could in turn save lives."
END
Notes:
• At present, foreign motorists often avoid prosecution, but thanks to MEPs drivers will now be able to be identified and fined for offences they commit anywhere in the EU. This includes things like speeding, drink-driving, not wearing a seat belt and failing to stop at a red light will all be covered.
